Stellate Ganglion Blocks for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Patients who suffer from Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) now have a new treatment available!

Stellate ganglion blocks are ideal for the patient who is refractory to conservative care, behavioral therapies, and pharmacotherapies (medications.  It has been shown that patients with symptoms of hyperarousal and anxiety seem to get the best results.  Some patients require several treatments to get maximal benefit.  Some patients require injections every few months to maintain benefits.  There are various factors involved in duration and success of treatment.

Stellate ganglion blocks have traditionally been done for pain conditions.  However, there is evidence showing some benefits for other conditions such as hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating), hot flashes,  and  painful conditions such as complex regional pain syndrome and atypical facial pain.  The stellate ganglion is the fusion of the inferior cervical ganglion and the first thoracic ganglion that mediate sympathetic fibers, also known as the adrenaline (fight or flight) nerves.  It is thought that PTSD may have sympathetically mediated pathways that are amenable to blocking this nerve structure.  Most patients note an immediate "calming effect" once the injection is done.  Some are even able to stop medications and have social interactions in public that they otherwise would not have been able to do.

Dr. Phillip Lim has done multiple stellate ganglion blocks for PTSD with good results.  Dr. Lim is one of the top physicians in the nation offering this procedure for PTSD.  He has done more of these injections for PTSD than many other providers in the United States.
